If you’re visiting Mt. Angel, figuring out where to eat is probably going to be part of your plans.
During Mt. Angel’s Oktoberfest, most people eat at the festival food booths, many of which support local schools, churches, and community organizations. It’s a great way to try German food and a wide variety of other foods, and support local groups at the same time.
But if you’re visiting another time of year—or you’re looking for a sit-down meal while you’re in town—Mt. Angel has several really good local restaurants to choose from.
German food is definitely part of the experience here, and you’ll find plenty of bratwurst, pretzels, sauerkraut, and other Bavarian-style foods. But you can also get excellent homestyle meals, Mexican food, burgers, coffee, and even beer brewed by the Benedictine monks at Mount Angel Abbey.
We’ve tried quite a few of them over the years, so if you’re wondering where to eat in Mt. Angel, Oregon, these are the places I would recommend.

Lou’s Kitchen: Homestyle Food and the Best German Chocolate Cake
Lou’s Kitchen is one of my favorite places to eat in Mt. Angel. It’s located right under the Glockenspiel in downtown Mt. Angel, so it’s also really convenient if you’re already walking around town.
They serve home-style food, and everything we’ve had there has been excellent. The fried chicken was especially good. It came out extremely hot, crispy, savory, and exactly what I was hoping for.
But the thing I would absolutely not skip is the German chocolate cake. It’s easily the best German chocolate cake I’ve ever had. It was so good that I have seriously considered going back and getting an entire cake for myself.
Do I need an entire German chocolate cake? No, but I keep trying to find a reason to need one…
Lou’s has a nice balance of being comfortable and casual without feeling like just another quick lunch stop. You could easily eat there with kids during the day, but it’s also nice enough if you want to sit down and have a good dinner.
Mt. Angel Sausage Company: Traditional German Food in Mt. Angel
If you’re visiting Mt. Angel because you want traditional German food, Mt. Angel Sausage Company is where you should stop first. This is where you’ll find bratwurst, knockwurst, pretzels, sauerkraut, German potato salad, and plenty of other traditional German and Bavarian-style foods.
The German potato salad is worth mentioning because it’s very different from the creamy, sweet potato salad you usually see in grocery stores. This is the more traditional German version with a slightly vinegary flavor. They also have authentic sauerkraut, several kinds of sausage, and really good pretzels.
There’s also a European market inside, and I definitely recommend taking a few minutes to look around even if you’re not planning to eat a full meal. You can buy sausages and other foods to take home, along with European candies, chocolates, snacks, and savory items that aren’t always easy to find at a regular grocery store.
It’s especially fun to stop in here during Oktoberfest, but it’s worth visiting any time of year if you want some of the traditional German flavors Mt. Angel is known for.
El Caporal: our pick for Mexican food
If you’re not in the mood for German food, El Caporal is a great option for Mexican food in Mt. Angel. We actually first tried their food in Silverton at their food cart, and we’ve eaten there several times since then.
It’s a traditional family Mexican restaurant with the kinds of dishes you would expect: tacos, quesadillas, burritos, combination plates, and plenty of other options. However there are several creative takes on these dishes that we really enjoy.
One of my favorites is a huge loaded quesadilla topped with bacon, ham, carne asada and veggies. I can’t remember what it’s called on the menu, but we’ve ordered it multiple times. It’s definitely big enough to split between two people.
My husband has had their tacos several times, and those have always been excellent too. This is an easy place to choose if you’re traveling with kids or a group and everyone just wants a good, filling meal. The portions are generous, and there are plenty of familiar options to choose from.
Burger Time: Burgers, Fries and Milkshakes
Sometimes you just want a burger and fries. For that, head to Burger Time.
This is a local mom-and-pop type of burger place with burgers, fries, onion rings, milkshakes, and all the usual things you’re hoping to find when you stop at a small-town burger joint. The burgers are good, and we really like their fries and onion rings.
They also have a good selection of milkshakes, including seasonal flavors. They’re made with ice cream and are exactly the kind of thick milkshake you want with a burger.
Burger Time is especially useful if you’re traveling with kids who aren’t interested in trying German food, or if you’ve already eaten your share of bratwurst during Oktoberfest and just want something simple.
Chic Skape: Coffee, Pastries and Light Bites
If you’re looking for coffee or a lighter meal, stop at Chic Skape. It’s right downtown on Main Street in an older brick building, so it’s an easy stop if you’re already exploring downtown Mt. Angel.
They make really good coffee, but they also have quite a few other drink options. You can get iced drinks, energy drinks, Italian sodas, and other cold drinks if coffee isn’t what you want.
For food, they usually have pastries and lighter breakfast or lunch options like bagel sandwiches. They also carry locally made baked goods from Fordyce Farms, which is one of the things I like about stopping there.
This is a good option if you don’t need a full sit-down meal, or if you just need coffee and something small before you keep exploring. It also works well for families because everyone can usually find something they want, whether that’s coffee, a sweet drink, a pastry, or a quick bite to eat.
Benedictine Brewery: beer, pretzels and one of the best views in Mt. Angel
Benedictine Brewery is probably my favorite place in Mt. Angel if you want somewhere to sit for a while and enjoy the view.
It’s located up the hill near Mount Angel Abbey. And if you haven’t been to Mt. Angel before, you’ll understand what I mean by “up the hill” when you get there.
The brewery is operated by the Benedictine monks from Mount Angel Abbey, who have been brewing beer there for years. You can see part of the brewing area through the glass, which is interesting even if you don’t know much about brewing.
They serve a selection of lighter pub-style foods and snacks. We really liked the fresh-baked pretzel bites.
But the main reason I like Benedictine Brewery is the outdoor space. There’s a large grassy area with outdoor seating, and when the weather is nice, it’s a great place to sit and relax for a while.
When we were there, there were kids playing on the grass and tossing a football back and forth while their families sat nearby.That makes it especially nice if you’re traveling with kids and they’re tired of sitting still in restaurants. There are also covered patio areas, and you get a beautiful view out over the valley.
If you visit on a nice afternoon or evening, this is where I would go if you want good drinks, something to eat, and a place where you don’t feel like you have to rush.
Which Mt. Angel Restaurant Should You Choose?
It really depends on what sounds good.
If you’re hoping for the full Bavarian experience, Mt. Angel Sausage Company is the obvious place to start. If you want comfort food and a sit-down dinner, I love Lou’s Kitchen. For something casual, El Caporal and Burger Time are both easy family options.
Chic Skape is perfect when you need coffee or a light bite while you’re exploring downtown.
And if the weather is nice and you have time to linger, I’d make the drive up toward Mount Angel Abbey and spend some time at Benedictine Brewery.
