The Easy Otter is one of our favorite places to go for dinner as a couple in Salem, Oregon. The food is incredible, the service has been excellent, and I love the cute otter paintings. It’s also on the same block as the Elsinore Theatre, which makes it an easy choice for dinner and a show.

We’ve tried several sandwiches and chicken dishes, and pretty much everything we’ve had has been good. But the chicken and waffle? That Belgian waffle was possibly the best I’ve ever had!

If you’re looking for a downtown Salem restaurant for date night, here’s what we love about the Easy Otter and what I’d recommend ordering.

What we recommend ordering at the Easy Otter

Chicken sandwich and fries
Canyonera sandwich

Fried chicken and chicken sandwiches

We really enjoy the Easy Otter’s fried chicken sandwiches and chicken dishes. We’ve tried a couple of their sandwiches over our visits, and they’ve given us plenty of reasons to come back.

One thing that stands out is how hot the food arrives. Our meals have come out piping hot—give that first bite a moment to cool!

If you’re trying to decide what to order on your first visit, anything with fried chicken is a great place to start.

Chicken and waffle

On one of our visits, we tried the chicken and waffle with maple syrup, and it was incredible.

The Belgian waffle was thick, sweet, and delicious. Honestly, it was possibly the best Belgian waffle I’ve ever had. I know the chicken is a big reason to visit, but that waffle deserves some attention of its own!

If it’s available when you go, this would be one of my first picks. Check the current menu for availability and when it’s served.

Country mac & cheese

Cajon Mac and cheese with fried chicken

We also tried the Country mac & cheese, and it was absolutely delicious. It’s pasta shells in a housemade Cajun cheese sauce, topped with fried chicken nuggets and andouille sausage.

This was comfort food with a slightly spicy twist. If you love mac and cheese but want something a little different, I highly recommend it!

Fried pickles (The Pickle Gambit)

I absolutely love fried pickles, and the Easy Otter does a great job with them.

They’re crispy, salty, and full of that dill pickle flavor. If you like fried pickles too, these are worth adding to your meal.

Po’ boy sandwiches

We’ve also tried their po’ boy sandwiches and enjoyed them. Between those, the chicken sandwiches, and the chicken and waffle, we’ve found several things we’d happily order again.

Check the current menu to see which sandwiches are available during your visit.

Beignets for dessert

Plain beignet, Lemon poppy seed beignet and marionberry beignet.

Save room for the beignets! They’re one of my favorite things about eating here.

During our visits, there have been regular flavors as well as seasonal options. I like having something different to consider depending on the time of year.

Ask what’s available when you go, especially if you’re hoping to try a seasonal flavor.

Why we like the Easy Otter for date night in Salem

Colorful parasols hang from the ceiling at the Easy Otter

The food is the biggest reason we keep coming back, but I also really enjoy the decor. The cute otter paintings give the restaurant personality, and the service has been excellent during our visits.

There are some fun tributes to The Simpsons show throughout the restaurant that fans will appreciate. The Easy Otter also hosts an annual Simpsons night with a special menu and fun activities.

For us, it’s an easy place to choose when we want to enjoy a good meal together. Two blocks away is the Hallie Ford Art Museum, and the Capitol grounds are just beyond that, which makes for a simple downtown Salem date.

My biggest piece of advice is to leave yourself enough time. This is a small restaurant, and we’ve seen it fill quickly. You’ll want time to get a seat, enjoy your meal, and have dessert before heading to the theater.

Tips for dinner before an Elsinore Theatre show

Here’s how I’d plan an evening around dinner at the Easy Otter:

  • Check the restaurant’s current hours first. Make sure dinner service works with your showtime.
  • Arrive earlier than you think you need to. A small dining room can fill quickly.
  • Allow time for parking and getting seated. Build that into your evening instead of counting only the time you’ll spend eating.
  • Leave room for beignets. You don’t want to discover you have to rush out before dessert!

If you have a firm curtain time, ask about the expected wait before ordering.
