Looking for a family-friendly hotel in Wichita that combines history, comfort, and convenience? The Hotel at Old Town is one of the most unique places to stay. It also makes an ideal home base for exploring the city with kids (or on your own).

Central location

Located right in the heart of Old Town Wichita, the Hotel at Old Town is a beautifully restored historic warehouse. It’s been transformed into a charming boutique hotel full of local art, museum-style exhibits, and warm Midwestern hospitality.

You’ll find restaurants, breweries, outdoor concerts, and even museums just steps away from this Wichita hotel. The convenient location made it easy for me to walk or take public transportation anywhere in downtown Wichita.

A historic stay with Wichita charm

The building was originally constructed in 1906. It was once home to the Keen Kutter warehouse, a popular brand known for tools, silverware, dishes, and sporting goods.

Decades later, Wichita hotelier Jack DeBoer purchased and transformed the building into a hotel that honors both its history and its hometown.

Even from the outside, you can sense the character of the space. Inside, the exposed brick walls and vintage touches remind you of building’s past, while the modern amenities make it perfect for today’s travelers.

Your introduction to Wichita’s history

Families and history buffs will especially love the self-guided mini museum tour that winds through the hotel’s four floors. Each level tells a different story.

The first, second and fourth floors showcase various artifacts from the Keen Kutter company’s history. On the first floor is Keen Kutter Tools and Appliances, the second floor has Keen Kutter Sporting Goods and the fourth floor is more tools.

The third floor is a highlight for kids and adults alike. Known as the “Air Capital of the World,” Wichita’s aviation roots come to life through archival-quality displays, historic photos, and airplane-themed art.

It’s worth requesting third floor guest rooms for your airplane enthusiasts! There are even more unique touches to be found in the hotel rooms.

Arrival from airport and check-in process

I arrived around 9 pm from the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT) via Lyft. There’s no airport shuttle to or from  the Old Town hotel, but it was only about a 20-minute drive.

Note: if you’re driving your own vehicle, there is free parking in the covered parking garage next to the hotel.

The front desk manager warmly welcomed me and helped me get checked in promptly. Since the key card machine was temporarily out of order, one of the friendly staff members walked me up to my room.

Comfortable accommodations

My king studio suite was clean and comfortable, with subtle aviation-themed decor. The spacious room included a kitchenette with a full-size refrigerator, freezer with built-in ice maker, hot plate, and dishes.

The full kitchen would be perfect for neurodivergent families with food sensitivities, or who like to prep snacks and simple meals. I personally loved having ice available right in my room!

The bathroom was gorgeous and bright, with high-quality free toiletries that gave a touch of elegance. All the rooms come with private bathrooms, and some also have Jacuzzis!

My guest room also came furnished with a flat-screen TV, armchair, work desk and work chair. The high-speed internet and free wi-fi made it possible for me to easily keep up on work.

The room’s design balances old and new beautifully. I loved the exposed brick wall and the view of Wichita’s Old Town lights at night. Everything was spotless, cozy, and thoughtfully arranged.

Family-friendly amenities

I ended up needing to do some laundry while at the hotel, and the guest laundry facilities were more than adequate. The front desk staff set me up with quarters and soap so I didn’t even have to leave the hotel.

For those who don’t have time to do laundry themselves, the Hotel at Old Town also offers laundry and dry cleaning services. This would be a huge help for a busy family who is out exploring all day!

The downstairs Cupboard has a snack bar, over-the-counter medications and other travel necessities available for purchase in case you forgot something. There’s also a fitness center on the fourth floor.

On-site amenities for adult travelers

The 24-hour business center is right near the front desk next to a stunning mural and a bronze “Keepers on Parade” statue.

In the mornings, you can enjoy a hot breakfast buffet for an additional fee. I decided to explore more of the downtown Wichita area for breakfast each day. There’s plenty of nearby breakfast spots within walking distance.

The 1906 Bar and lounge downstairs is a great place to unwind, featuring live jazz on weekends. I enjoyed the live music and a local beer with some work friends on Friday night, and it was so fun and relaxing!

The staff at the Hotel at Old Town were consistently friendly and helpful. Whether I needed laundry supplies or recommendations for local restaurants, everyone I interacted with responded cheerfully and promptly.

The hotel also works with local attractions and businesses to offer discounts for guests, called their Gold Cap Experience. It’s really a fantastic set up for making the most of your stay in Wichita.
