Best Places to Stay in Hood River, Oregon for Families (and Couples, Too)

If you love this content, please share it!

Hood River is one of those places that looks simple on a map. Then you arrive—and realize how much where you stay matters.

This Columbia River Gorge town packs in wind sports, waterfalls, food trucks, train tracks, and Highway 84. It’s vibrant and beautiful. It can also be loud, compact, and surprisingly overwhelming with kids.

We’ve stayed in Hood River with children, teens, and as a couple. This guide shares the best places to stay in Hood River, Oregon for families, with honest notes for couples, too. It’s practical, experience-based, and designed to help you book with confidence.

Before you book: a few Hood River realities

Hood River is not a resort town, although it’s becoming more and more popular as a tourism destination. It’s a working river town with energy, especially during seasonal water sports events.

As you’re choosing a place to stay, keep in mind:

None of this makes Hood River less desirable. But it does mean room layout, location, and sound insulation matter more than décor. For neurodivergent or sensory-sensitive families especially, space beats style every time.

We also recommend packing a sound machine or noise-cancelling headphones for everyone.

3-star Hotel
Best for: Families, teens, neurodivergent travelers

If you’re traveling with kids, this is the easiest recommendation. We stayed here in a two-room suite, and it was the perfect place to stay while exploring Hood River and The Dalles.

We spent three nights here and my favorite thing about it was the layout. With two separate bedrooms (each with its own separate bathroom), plus a living room and a full kitchen, we had plenty of space to decompress individually. My son LOVED the jetted tub!

For our neurodivergent family, having separate, closed-off rooms was a huge plus. No one had to mask all morning or evening.

I especially loved watching the sunrise over the hills from the back deck each day. We also enjoyed the river walk that passes just outside the door.

We did hear occasional highway and river noise since this hotel is right on the banks of the Columbia River, but inside it wasn’t disruptive.

Standout features

  • Two-room family suites
  • Full kitchens available
  • Outdoor heated pool
  • On-site restaurant and lounge
  • Waterfront access next to Hood River Riverwalk
  • Fitness center and hot tub

This is the hotel we’d book again for a family vacation with the kids.

Hampton Inn & Suites Hood River

3-star Hotel
Best for: Families who want predictability

This is a newer hotel with modern, reliable layouts that guests will find familiar. It’s in a prime location next to the pedestrian bridge across from the History Museum of Hood River County, and a short walk from dozens of breweries and the Hood River event center.

Many of the guest rooms offer views of the river (Hood River flows right next to it). Suites offer extra space for families with comfortable beds and modern amenities. Pets are also welcome here.

Note that it’s directly off Highway 84, so if highway noise tends to bother your family, you may want to choose another option.

Standout features

  • Free buffet breakfast (guests rave about it!)
  • Indoor pool and hot tub
  • Fitness center
  • Free parking

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Hood River

3-star hotel
Best for: Short family stays and road trips

This is another solid, no-stress option for families. The rooms are functional, and there are some suites if you want a bit more breathing room. The free breakfast helps mornings go smoother with kids, or if you’re needing a quick start to the day.

It’s close to the highway, which is convenient, but also can be more noisy. For many families, the tradeoff is worth it. Plus, there are gas stations, groceries and fast food just steps away for road trippers to quickly stock up on necessities.

The rooms on the north side of the hotel (even-numbered) have great views of the Columbia River and Mt. Adams.

Mount Adams

Standout features

  • Free hot breakfast
  • Indoor pool
  • Fitness center
  • Easy parking

Westcliff Lodge

2-star hotel
Best for: Families who want quieter evenings

This lodge sits a little outside downtown, and that’s exactly why some families love it. The rooms are larger than many downtown options, and some include fireplaces. There’s a beautiful garden, a kids play area, and this is also a pet-friendly hotel.

You’ll need a car to explore Hood River from here, but the quieter location and stunning river views may be well worth it for your family. These buildings are older but well-maintained, and the service is excellent.

Standout features

  • Larger rooms, some with fireplaces
  • River and gorge views
  • Quiet setting
  • Free parking

Columbia Gorge Hotel & Spa

4-star hotel
Best for: Romantic getaways and anniversaries

Cliffside at the Columbia Gorge Hotel and Spa

This hotel feels romantic from the moment you arrive. The stunning gardens, including a cascading creek waterfall, invite you to slow down and enjoy the moment. Cliffside dining and River views made this one of our most memorable stays.

We stayed here for our anniversary, and enjoyed the unique features of this historic building. The Columbia Gorge Hotel was built in 1904, and has ongoing renovations to preserve the iconic property.

Welcome letter from the Columbia Gorge Hotel for our 10th anniversary

It’s important to know what you’re booking when you stay at a historic hotel. While many updates and modern amenities are part of the experience, you may also note that rooms and bathrooms are more compact.

Overall, this hotel was the perfect place to celebrate an anniversary together and we had a lovely stay. However we wouldn’t recommend it for families with younger kids.

Standout features

  • On-site spa
  • Fine dining restaurant
  • Historic charm
  • Gardens and walking paths

Columbia Cliff Villas Hotel

3-star hotel
Best for: Couples or families with teens

If you want views and space, this is a strong option. The villas provide more separation than standard hotel rooms, and some include kitchenettes. Guests rave about the incredible views of the Columbia River and the comfortable rooms.

Note that there is no elevator, so rooms that are not on the ground floor will require walking up stairs. The railroad track is below the cliffs, and occasionally you can hear the trains from the rooms.

Standout features

  • Private villas
  • Kitchenettes in select units
  • River views
  • Hot tub
  • Fitness center

The Lightwell Hotel & Spa

3-star hotel
Best for: Adult-only trips

This recently renovated historic building is now a boutique hotel with a wellness focus. On-site dining and spa services mean that you can truly unwind here. The concierge can also help you get outfitted for your Hood River outdoor adventures as needed (kayaks, bikes, gear).

The rooms are stylish but compact, with luxurious touches and beautiful Gorge views. The Rooftop bar with fire pits makes for a memorable end to a day of exploring or relaxing.

The Lightwell is centrally located just steps from the Mt. Hood Railroad and Hood River City Hall. It’s pet-friendly, but not necessarily suited for families with younger children. We’d recommend it for adult vacations.

Standout features

  • On-site spa
  • Modern design
  • Central location

Book your stay at the Lightwell Hotel for a wellness retreat.

Budget and Boutique Options in Downtown Hood River

Hood River Hotel

3-star hotel
Best for: Couples and solo travelers

This historic hotel sits right in downtown, with one of Hood River’s top-rated restaurants right next to the lobby (Broder Ost). It’s full of vintage details and feels like a step back in time. It’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The charming, antique vibes also mean less of the modern features that some travelers expect. Rooms are smaller, and some bathrooms are shared. Noise can be a problem too. We’d definitely recommend this for adults-only trips, not for families with young kids.

Thistledown on Oak

3-star hotel
Best for: Couples who want luxury and excellent service

This boutique inn boasts almost perfect Google reviews (4.9/5)! Visitors love its thoughtfully curated 19th-century furnishings and details, and the Thistledown’s customer service is highly rated.

The Thistledown is in the center of downtown, just blocks from the Mt. Hood Railroad and City Hall. Rooms are comfortable but on the smaller size, so it’s best for couples or individual stays.

Standout features

  • Walkable location
  • Boutique atmosphere
  • Some rooms with kitchenettes

Horsefeathers Hotel

2-star hotel
Best for: Budget-minded travelers

This hotel is actually 4 separate luxury condo units, each containing a kitchen and various room layouts (one or two bedrooms). Some units also have a deck or patio, gas fireplaces and other amenities. This would be a great “middle ground” between a vacation rental and a standard hotel.

The Horsefeathers Hotel is in the downtown area, and offers walkability and beautiful views from the hillside. Many of the reviews say this is a great place for wedding parties, or small business teams that are looking for a retreat with space for corporate meetings.

Standout features

  • Affordable rates for families
  • Easy access to downtown
  • Laundry facility available on-site

What about vacation rentals?

For many families, vacation rentals are the best choice. We love them for multi-night stays because most vacation rentals include full kitchens, laundry, multiple bedrooms and privacy.

If you’re looking at Hood River vacation rentals, you’ll want to pay close attention to:

  • Distance from Highway 84
  • Proximity to train tracks
  • Air conditioning in summer
  • Parking access

River views are beautiful, but sometimes louder than expected. Read the reviews carefully, and check the map before booking.
